The new iPhone, released last day, has been creating controversy. Apple has removed the charger (it only comes with an USB cable) and the earpods. The reason was purely environmentalist, but many people don’t believe that.
It is true that removing those accessories helps reduce carbon emissions, as now iPhones come in smaller boxes, thus they can be shipped in larger quantities at the same time, reducing pollution. However, new iPhone users will have to buy the charger, sold separately on Apple’s website, which may neutralize the positive effect.
In addition, people have criticised Apple because of charging the full price for a phone that only comes with an USB-lighting cable. If someone wants to listen to music, they will need to buy airpods, or any other alternative, causing an increase in the final price paid.
Owners of other iPhones can use the same charger and earpods, but the vast majority of them state that nowadays chargers stop functioning normally after 2 to 3 years of use, obligating people who come from older iPhones to buy a charger.
Do you think Apple has established a path for other companies to follow? Or do you think this measure is a fail?
